STEADY BODY; peripheral dances, sacred gestures
The complex ensemble of Afro-diasporic dances is one of the most enduring ancestral technologies of resistance that we know nowadays. These manifestations, reinvented by the black population where we now understand as the American Continent and the Caribbean territories, were for a long time categorized as folkloric, ethnic, animist, tribal, social, popular, rural or even urban, so that some studies could be performed. Many of these investigations, by prioritizing “museification” dynamics, through the logics of what is or isn’t collectible or editable, ended up hiding what remains most sophisticated and free in these emancipation practices.
Through the lab called – STEADYBODY; peripheral dances, sacred gestures – we’ll essay the various component layers of these radical movements in what is common to all : futurity, groove, tension, recodification and image travelling. In order to cultivate and expand this knowledge by the timeless and live approach, we’ll create an experience through different traditional axes and artistic regimes, each journey as an opportunity to dive inside some evergreen histories, major figures, esthetics, crossroads between poetics and politics of invisibility and this steadybody whom reorganize the contemporary’s World imaginaries and repair in beauty the word: navigation.

Another Anagram of Ideas
research

Artist Research Fellowship programme by Cisneros Institute and MoMA.
[…] Another Anagram of Ideas, includes a video and this text, addressing dreams, recodification, and radical imagination. Wherein, I choreographed images and words while transiting between balance, tension, and subtlety. The action of carrying water on the head, very present in Haiti and at the Festa da Lavagem do Bonfim in Bahia, was the physical gesture that went along with all of my moves during this entire making. The investigation of transdisciplinarity and translation, perseverance and invisible histories, required a poetic conversation more precisely with the notions of rhythm, repetition, and the permanence of ancestral African gestures in the diaspora. I invite you to focus your attention, to see and experience the vitality of these radical heritages, where dance is the deepest way of thinking about humanity, fertility, and the future.

about the touch

Over the last 10 years I have shared with many people and places the power of dances that come from the streets. This work has demanded a lot of tonus and dedication from me; there have been approximately 500 presentations all around the world. By very little this amazing journey would have been chewed up, erased and made invisible by the disappearing machine.
One day I’ll publish my book and I’ll tell you more about this roadtrip.
This conférence dansée was an opportunity to collectively reflect about:
speaking as many languages as possible
giving and receiving smiles and sweetness
moving from within the trauma
knowing evil and dance beauty
crossing higher mountains and feel earthquake
peripheral gaze infinite perspectives
cultivating the steps of my ancestors
writing a book and expand history
much more than 400 shows and tasting earth
choreographing the future and justice
having all ages inside a little body
healing the audience from the fear of death
listening to the temperature of the humanity
always improvise and shine and share life
sharing the afro-diasporic pedagogy
not letting the erasure happen
knowing how to stay inside a cypher and groove
creating the dialogue with the kids
helping to implode the binary
being whole in any space
returning to the great continent
